Hicks was shot by an officer during a physical struggle at a gas station, according to authorities. The officer was responding to a call from Hicks's wife alleging that Hicks was hitting her. A witness reportedly claimed the officer started the struggle by striking Hicks first while handcuffing him. Authorities later said the officer tried to use a Taser on Hicks but that the weapon was knocked from his hand. The officer was treated for a bite to a hand and was being monitored for a possible concussion.
